Gaiety ACT Out! is The Gaiety’s community theatre outreach initiative across South Ayrshire for excluded young people and older people living with dementia .
We deliver a range of high quality creative projects in communities across South Ayrshire as well as within the Gaiety itself. ACTout! aims to remove any barriers people may experience in accessing theatre and offer opportunities as an audience member or as a participant in performance and technical theatre.
We work in multiple locations including areas of deprivation where income may prevent participation in the performing arts and in rural areas where opportunities to participate are limited geographically. Through our work we aim to increase well-being by developing confidence, social skills, resilience and positive aspirations for young people, and by reducing loneliness and isolation for older people.
Since launching in October 2014, we have:
- Engaged over 1,000 people, young and old through work delivered in: Tarbolton, Mossblown, Coylton, Symington, North Ayr (Lochside, Braehead, Whitletts), Ayr, Prestwick, Kincaidston, Maybole, Minishant, Kirkmichael and Girvan
- Delivered over 800 hours of drama workshops in 31 different projects
- Supported young people to earn over 105 awards
- Worked with disengaged school pupils, young people with additional support needs and learning difficulties, recent school leavers and at risk young people
- Worked with 18 schools and 7 care homes

Audiences are capped so there’s more space to stretch your legs, additional signage is in place, there’s improved contrasting of surfaces, you can move around freely and we encourage you to get involved by singing along and getting up to dance!
Events begin at 2pm (doors open 1.30pm) in The Gaiety Studio Theatre – tickets £5 (companions go free). Delivered in partnership with Live Music Now Scotland and supported by South Ayrshire Charitable Trust SCO 45677

“The Gaiety programme gave the children a great experience of theatre. It opened their eyes to a wide variety of jobs available in theatre which ensured every pupil was able to adopt a role they were interested in therefore pupil motivation was high. Using role play to explore areas of the curriculum enabled pupils to experience real life issues that may arise and made these more meaningful.” – Mrs Rodger, Doonfoot Primary School
“It was a lovely afternoon. The residents are still talking about it days later, they absolutely loved it. We found it really relaxing environment and enjoyed singing along.” – Caroline Toal, Dundonald House Nursing Home
“Thank you for the awesome experience at the Gaiety. I really enjoyed making this epic show and the props for it. It was so fun working with my friends. It was just so, so fun and I hope I can do it again with my class. I loved doing the set design because I could be creative and paint the props and I would run on stage and put the props on. “ ….. “I am writing to give you my sincerest thanks for letting us have this amazing opportunity. We have had a taster of what working in a proper theatre is like. I have developed many new skills that I know will come in handy in the future.”…… “I feel way more confident than I did before.” – P6 Pupils, Doonfoot Primary School
“Great for confidence and building friendships… Wee one has one been coming along for a few months and absolutely loves her time… I feel her confidence has come on a lot since starting drama… This has helped my child to be more outgoing and not be so shy she can now join in with other kids… Absolutely brilliant!” – Parents from ACT Out! Lochside
“We learned creative skills and how to work together as a group … We improved our confidence to try out new things … Some of us would never have felt confident to do anything like this before!” – Pupils from Minishant and Kirkmichael Primary Schools
“The Gaiety provides our residents with precious present moments, steeped in musical memories alive in our hearts once more. A gift of being temporarily transformed to yester year, all done with warmth and inclusiveness. It’s fab!” – Wilson Merideth, Manager, Cumnor Hall Care Home
“I was surprised and delighted by how confident several of our shyer children were. The children enjoyed the project and loved the creative aspect. Parents appreciated that children had been offered an experience not readily available in school. I can’t think of any improvements.” – Fiona McDougall, Head Teacher, Cairn Primary
